Samsung Galaxy S3 to come to Australia? “No plans” at this time!

While European, Asian, and North American technology lovers are already getting their budgets straight and making plans for the Samsung Galaxy S3, Australians don’t have much to be excited for, at least at for now. In an exclusive statement given to the guys at gizmodo.au, Samsung Australia said that there are no plans to make any announcements right now about the phone’s availability in “the land down under”.

The full statement reads as follows: “Samsung Electronics Australia is pleased there is continued interest about our GALAXY range in Australia, but we have no plans to make any announcements at this time.”

While it’s pretty difficult to make any safe assumptions based on this short statement, there could only be three possible reasons why Samsung Australia is reluctant to talk about the Galaxy S3’s availability.

First off, Sammy’s new flagship phone might never come to Aussie tech users, which is the worst-case scenario, but also the least credible. Compared to the US or China, the Australian market might not be a gold mine for Samsung or other smartphone manufacturers, but is still has more potential than several European countries where we are sure that the S3 will be sold.

We remember seeing the Galaxy S2 put up for sale in “exotic” places like Uganda, Yemen, or Lebanon. Also, we’ve been hearing people in the business saying that Samsung intends to expand in new markets, so there’s absolutely no way the S3 won’t come to Australia.

The second and most likely reason behind Samsung’s statement is that the company simply doesn’t know yet when it will be able to offer the phone in Australia. The negotiations between the three major mobile carriers there (Telstra Mobile, Optus, and Vodafone) and Sammy might not be finalized. The Galaxy S3 will definitely come to at least some of these major Australian networks.

Finally, this whole mystery might just be a marketing scheme to build up even more hype around the phone. Last year, the Galaxy S2 was released in Australia way before Canada and the US, and around the same time it arrived in Asia. The S3 has already been confirmed as hitting Asia right after Europe (sometime before June 15) and the flagship phone could well be launched in Australia at the same time.

Just because Samsung tells us today that they have no plans to make announcements at this time it doesn’t mean that they won’t make an announcement tomorrow or next week, now does it?

All in all, while we are certainly disappointed that we are not able to report clear things about the Galaxy S3′ release date in Australia. Our advice for all Aussie tech users reading us now would be to have a little patience. I know it’s hard, but until we know something for sure, there’s no reason to panic!

A friend of an ex-Rockstar North employee leaked a ton of GTA V details on the GameSpot forums under the username Gloggle. The post was quickly taken down, but an article on Examiner.com managed to get a copy of the text before it was taken down.
Here is the post in its entirety:
“Hello!
I am a friend of someone who recently got sacked from RockStar North for general misconduct. Because one contract to RockStar covered everything, including secrecy, and his contractual obligaton was now removed, he was legally allowed to spill the beans on Rockstar’s upcoming GTA V. And he is making damn sure everyone knows about it.
Here is the info you really want:
1. The protagonist will be one character, and one character alone. His name is (as some rumours said) Albert De Silva. He’s a half hispanic man who was once part of a crime family in Vice City. He decided to settle down and have kids in Los Santos. He has one son called Kevin De Silva who is your stereotypical CoD player. He’s lazy, useless and shouts racial abuse online and is really into FPS games. Kevin does admire his Dad though.
2. Multiplayer will hold 32 people on the Xbox and PS3. I wasn’t told how many were able to be on the PC. Just like in RDR, players will be able to form Gangs. These gangs are not ranked through XP anymore, but via Reputation. Instead of gang hideouts, you can do jobs that range from robbing a launderette to breaking into a military base and stealing state-of-the-art weaponary. The Gang leader has much more control over his or her gang by being able to rank members of their gang and setting more specific objectives to specific members of their gang. Gangs can have their own terratory but this only applies to areas inside the city of Los Santos.
3. The map is about 5x as large as the GTA IV map and the City of Los Santos takes up just under half of this area (so it’s a bit bigger than 2 GTA IV Liberty Cities).
The map is (like most GTAs) seperated into three different sections. 4. Planes are flyable, they range from World War 2 fighter planes to Private Jets.
5. Cars and guns are customisable to an extent, for example, you can cusomise a gun to have a supressor on it and you can install nitrous into cars.
Here’s some stuff you might like:
1. The protagonist is the “rich guy” from the GTA V debut trailer. You get to learn more about this man in the second when he talks about his troubles. You only see the protagonist twice in the trailer. First time is the side of his face and second time is when he is driving a Deceptor (Audi R8). The people robbing the jewellery store are just with the protagonist. He is driving the van ready to get away.
2. Gunfights are more realistic. When you are shooting a gun out of a window of a car, depending on how fast it’s going you will have troubles aiming due to shaking cameras.
3. The game is due in May 2013. A more specific date has not been decided because the game is still needing 6 months to be fully developed. They will have a playable demo at E3.
4. Police chases are now way more than either running or driving. Depending on how wanted you are, police may bring out riot shields and flash bangs.
5. When someone reaches 4 star wanted level, there will be a radio warning on some stations.
6. Radio stations now do traffic reports that are actually correct. So if you don’t know what route to take, you can check the traffic reports on your phone or the radio.
7. The in-game TV now has many more channels
8. The protagonist DOES NOT die unlike in the last two Rockstar games.
9. The underworld actually has a working economy that you can contribute to by buying and selling drugs, weapons and illegal cars in single player.
10. The protagonist can take drugs which will have some effects. But smoking weed on the streetwalk will lead to getting a one star wanted level.
11. Police cars will go after you if you’re obviousely breaking the speed limit. Having high speed crashes will also damage your health.
Wanted levels:
1 star – police follow you on foot and try to make an arrest. No sirens, no car chases (unless you are speeding).
2 star – police will still attempt to make an arrest. If a weapon is drawn then the police will begin opening fire. Police will use stun guns if a weapon is not drawn.
3 star – Chases begin and the police don’t care how they stop you, they just want to do it.
4 star – road traps, radio stations and much more hostile police.Even when you have evaded them, they will still search for 24 in-game hours for someone matching your description.
5 star – shoot to kill, arrest only if it’s made very possible. Even when you have evaded them, they will still search for 48 in-game hours for someone matching your description. Few missions become unavailable if you are wanted.
6 star – military vehicles come after you. Even when you have evaded them, they will still search for 72 in-game hours for someone matching your description. Some missions become unavailable if you are wanted.”
What do you think? Is this real or is it just an internet troll seeking attention? The answer will only come in time, but, in the meantime, we would love to hear your thoughts!

or people who consider the words of Steve Wozniak, Apple co-founder and geek extraordinaire, as law, you might want to know what “the Woz” thinks of Windows Phone devices in comparison to Android phones and the iPhones. Upon announcing to the world via his Twitter account that he has picked up the flagship Nokia Lumia 900 phone, Wozniak apparently had nice things to say about the $99.99 device.

Talking to A New Domain, Wozniak professed his love for the Windows phone and how he’d prefer it over Android phones “just for looks and beauty”. He said it was shocking to see how apps appear on the phone’s screen and how they are “much more beautiful than the same apps on Android and iPhone.” Wozniak pins this down to either Microsoft or Nokia making more effort in pushing key app developers to make “specialized beautiful ones or put their own themes on.”

Given that Wozniak owns more than a dozen or so gadgets, which include two iPhone 4S, a Motorola Droid Razr, and a Nokia Lumia 900 that he had with him during the interview, such positive appraisals would be very much welcomed by Microsoft’s camp.

Though Wozniak praised Windows Phone 7 for its superior visual appearance and more attractive operation cues, he made his allegiance to Apple clear by saying in a follow-up comment that the iPhone is still the number one phone in his heart. The blow for Android doesn’t end there, however, as he also wrote that he’d recommend Windows Phone over Android phones because the latter “doesn’t yet have the breadth of apps.” Windows Phone, on the other hand, is complimented for setting the mark for user interface.

Wozniak wrapped up his praise for Windows Phone by stating, in a light-hearted way, that he saw hints of Steve Job’s legacy in Windows Phone, given how intuitive and beautiful the Metro interface is, which isn’t really an accurate assessment since the design can be attributed mostly to Joe Belfiore, a Microsoft veteran of 20 years.

Whether you agree or disagree with “the Woz”, it’s always interesting to hear what the man has to say given his genuine affection for technology.

I’m sure that most of our readers already know that Apple and Google are (and will continue to be for a while) involved in a number of lawsuits pertaining to various patents that one company or the other is supposedly breaking. What many might not know is that, in a number of cases, Apple has requested to learn information about Google’s services and software just so they can sue the search giant for supposedly breaking other patents after analyzing the data.

The latest of these requests, made by Apple as part of the motion for preliminary injunction against the latest Google smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, is by far the most interesting of them all. Apple has requested to learn the differences — if any — between the open source Android code available at https://android.googlesource.com/platform/manifest and the source code for the Android version on the Galaxy Nexus. Even more interesting was Google’s reason for not being able to share that information: “Although Google releases some versions of Android through the Android Open Source Project, the internal functionality of Android running on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is Google’s trade secret.”

Google lawyers made it clear that this is the same way that the iPhone source code was treated in a previous iPhone antitrust case (quoting the official ruling: “because the iPhone source code is a trade secret, plaintiffs have the burden to establish that it is both relevant and necessary.”). But to some, Google’s answer has revealed a bit more about the relatively open nature of the Android OS.

The OS should be the same with all Android smartphones, right? Wrong, as it seems that Samsung has received a secret version of Android to use on the Galaxy Nexus. Just imagine how far Google could go down this path with the biggest company they’ve every acquired, Motorola. It looks like the dissatisfaction of some Android manufacturers regarding the Google-Motorola merger is based on solid facts, and not just a product of their paranoid business heads.

Samsung Wins Patent For Dual Screen Tablet

Are the days of single screen tablets are numbered? Samsung, the South Korean technological giant that has been making waves in the smartphone space, has recently been awarded a patent for a ‘dual screen design for a terminal for portable mobile communication’.

The design that was filed for patent features two 7-inch tablets attached by a hinge to create a clamshell-style dual screen tablet. It also has a remote control device, which is reportedly a business-oriented tool meant for use during presentations or other business related endeavors. The patent, numbering D658173, was filed on last April 7 and names Kim Dong-Hun as the inventor.

The addition of a second screen has several serious implications for power users and multitask fanatics. With the bottom screen being used as a virtual keyboard and the top one as word processing app, it’s easy to see why. That being said, the joys of non-tactile typing a la ASUS Transfomer won’t be there, folks. Other dual-screen devices have also been launched but the differences are vast in one aspect; its popularity.

http://1.androidauthority.com/wp-content...adgets.jpg

The Sony Tablet P, which featured a rounded outer shell, meant that it never lay flat. While Sony marketed it as a do all device, the truth is that it is old news by now. The second device known for its dual screens is the Nintendo DS, which is used popularly for gaming.
This is not the first time that we have seen a dual-screen design for Android. Among less commercial examples, there is the Kyocera Echo, which failed to do well. While the Tablet P from Sony was one of the first tablets to feature the dual-screen aspect, folks have complained that – because of its rounded, clamshell design – is difficult to use on a flat surface. Although the Sony Tablet P wasn’t really designed for business purposes to begin with. But have you seen this device below?

While the video above is just of a concept, it goes to show you that our mobile devices are continually pushing the envelope of utility and design. Do you like what you see?

So, the idea that Samsung could release a more business-centric tablet could be plausible and will most likely be welcomed. While nothing suggests that a tablet like this is in the works, the idea of a well implemented dual-screen tablet would certainly be nice. The details received so far indicate of a device that targets the business class, something that Samsung has not done yet with its tablets.

Samsung has always encouraged innovation and this is especially true when it comes to screen size and quality. The Galaxy Note is a perfect example, what with its 5.3-inch screen and the fact that it really spurred the push for the ‘phablet’ design, like LG‘s Optimus VU.

Samsung looks to push the innovation envelope again if their recent patent is any indication. The patent surely brings along a large number of possibilities as to what Samsung could possibly be doing with it. Only time will tell as what the next Samsung tablet will look like.

The Adam tablet from Notion Ink is probably the only (sort of) well-known device on the market today that sports a Pixel Qi screen. Nevertheless, we’ve been having the feeling for a while that the California-based startup is preparing something big. That something big has just been revealed to be its next generation of displays, which the company claims are “better than iPad 3 displays”. That is a truly bold statement, considering the fact that Apple’s latest tablet sports a pretty phenomenal 9.7-inch LED-backlit display with IPS technology, an impressive 2048 x 1536 pixels resolution, and a pixel density of 264 ppi.

The future Pixel Qi screens should come with the exact same resolution as the iPad 3 Retina displays, while consuming significantly less power. The guys at Pixel Qi have posted a very interesting (and once again bold) chart on their official blog, comparing the power usage of the iPad 2, the iPad 3, the Pixel Qi current-gen display, and the “proposed” next-gen Pixel Qi.

If the projections prove accurate (and, of course, if the next-gen display is more than vaporware), the Pixel Qi screens will consume (in the ultra low power mode) up to 100 times less energy than Apple’s new iPad. That’s a huge difference, no matter how you look at it, and Mary Lou Jepsen, Pixel Qi’s founder, claims that these upcoming displays will match the performance of the Retina display.

The iPad 3’s contrast, color saturation, and viewing angles (which amazed even Android geeks a while back) should all be “matched or exceeded” by the quality of these future Pixel Qi screens, if everything goes according to plan.

Hmm, that sounds just a tad too good to be true, so I, for one, am not going to believe it until I’ll see it with my own eyes. When will that happen (or if it will ever happen) is hard to tell, but Pixel Qi claims it’s already in the process of finalizing development partnerships.

Of course, Jepsen kept hush about the identity of these development partners, but we sure hope to see Android-based products sporting Pixel Qi displays, sometimes soon. Hopefully, that Android partner would be a player with more clout than Notion Ink.

Once upon a time, mobile phones used to weigh a couple of pounds (literally), feature large antennas, and very basic designs, and were used primarily to make and receive voice calls. Today’s smartphones are as much gaming machines and music players as they are devices for managing calls. However, mobile gaming is still far off from the quality of console or PC games and you might think that things will stay that way for a long, long time.

If we are to believe NVIDIA’s claims, though, this situation could well change in the (very) near future, with mobile GPU (graphics processing unit) performance set to be on-par or even surpass console power by 2014. As you can see from the nice slide below, coming straight from NVIDIA, mobile GPU performance is currently way behind the performance of PCs and consoles. The chart is not very easy to read and might get a tad confusing, but, as far as I can tell, console performance equals nowadays mobile GPU power multiplied with four or five.

In other words, consoles are a solid four or five times faster than smartphones or tablets these days. But the race might get a lot tighter as soon as next year, and, if NVIDIA’s projections prove accurate, mobile GPUs might be as fast as console processing units by 2014. On the other hand, mobile processors are likely to remain significantly slower than PC chips over the next years, so the number one gaming platform should remain the same, at least for the near future.

If you’re confused by the graph, the solid lines are the estimated performance levels for each platform, while the dotted lines represent trends. The console line features two plateaus, representing the performance of the Xbox 1 and Xbox 360, while the mobile graph starts with Apple’s first iPhone and continue with NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 and Tegra 3 platforms.

This graph should be taken more like a marketing material than an accurate technical representation of the evolution of hardware. Then again, NVIDIA is not the only one predicting an important leap in performance for mobile GPUs.

Two words – Smartphone, projector. What’s not to love? Do you remember the Samsung Galaxy Beam Android-based smartphone with a built-in projector that was unveiled back at the MWC in February? You better.

Perhaps the reason that most of you might have forgotten about this particularly cool gizmo is that it hasn’t been advertised since its official introduction. As is normally the case with products that are announced to the nerd-elite at events like CES and MWC, are the gadgets we all know and love.

Most recently though, the guys at Engadget picked up an FCC mention of the Galaxy Beam. Featuring 3G support for GSM 1900 MHz and 850 MHz bands, Sammy’s phone/projector seems destined to be made available on AT&T in the United States, and soon at that.

Of couse, there’s still no mention about the device’s pricing and release date, but it’s sure nice to know that at least one American carrier is planning to pick this up and unleashing it into the market.

After all, the Galaxy Beam looks like a pretty innovative and original gadget, even though some of you might be phased by its rather modest tech specs. With a 1 GHz dual-core processor and 768 MB of RAM under the hood, this little guy will sport a 4-inch TFT WVGA screen with 480 x 800 pixels resolution, which is anything but high-end right now.

Only running Android 2.3 Gingerbread under the hood, the 4-incher should be pretty satisfying in terms of autonomy, with a 2,000 mAh battery, while the biggest ace up its sleeve should of course be that 15 lumens nHD built-in projector with 640 x 360 pixels resolution.

I don’t want to make any wild guesses about the device’s release date, but it usually doesn’t take a smartphone more than a month or two after an FCC leak to get all the approvals it needs, to clear its final testing stages to then be made officially official, officially. Then again, this is not your regular Android-based handheld, so we might just have to wait a bit more to see it hit AT&T’s (or anybody else’s) shelves.

Samsung Galaxy S3 caught on video? Impressive specs revealed

The Samsung Galaxy S3 rumor bonanza is building up as we get closer to the unveiling event set to take place in London on May 3. However, the leaks and speculations seem to be gaining consistency and credibility, and now we might just have caught the future Sammy flagship on video.

The “next big thing” appears in a Vietnamese video brought to you exclusively by the guys at Tinhte, a website that has a very good record of getting mobile devices before anyone else. On the other hand, the video clip has to be treated with caution, as there’s no way to know for sure if it’s real and if that beast caught on camera is really the Galaxy S3.

Also, you shouldn’t judge this smartphone’s design very harsh, as it seems that the gadget has been nicely tucked into a disguise outfit. There’s a fake outer shell on top of the device, so we can’t say how much will the phone measure, how thick it will be, and what kind of materials will be used on its chassis.

What we can say, though, is that, if this device proves to actually be the Galaxy S2 successor we are all waiting for, its technical specs are impressive, to say the least.

Packing a quad-core 1.4 GHz Exynos processor, the Galaxy S3 (or whatever Sammy will end up calling it) might just be the snappiest smartphone of 2012. Aside from the chipset, which is on-par with most of the latest rumors that came our way, the beast should feature 1 GB of RAM, as well as an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera.

With 16 GB of on-board storage, the future Sammy super-phone will most likely also come with a microSD card slot (hooray!). The rest of the features exclusively “revealed” in the video include a 4.6-inch display with a 1184 x 720 pixels resolution and 320 PPI pixel density, NFC support, Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, and a 2,050 mAh battery (probably non-removable).

The Taiwanese clip shortly compares the Galaxy S3 with the Galaxy Nexus, putting the two side by side, but I personally wouldn’t rely on that comparison, as it is pretty obvious that the real S3 will look very different than the test device in the video.

No Samsung officials have commented on the veracity of the video clip just yet, the official response given earlier to Engadget being an unsurprising “we will be able to tell you more at the 2012 Samsung Mobile Unpacked”.

You can check out the video clip below, with English subtitles, but if I were you I would hurry up, because it’s very possible for it to be removed from YouTube, as it happened with the original clip earlier today. If that is to happen, though, the guys at Engadget already managed to pick up a copy of the video, which can be seen at this link at any time.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the S3 would feature the tech specs shown in this video, as most of them were mentioned in previous rumors and speculations. A quad-core Exynos processor, the HD AMOLED display, 1 GB of RAM, an SD card slot, a pretty huge battery, and this could be the biggest hit in Android’s history so far.
